M-PRESSIONS
I think there is a lot of confusion
to a lot of people about worship. I am one of these people as well. I
struggle to find the balance between offering a sacrifice of praise, and
just not getting into a worship set or song. Musical worship is one of
the most confusing times to many people. Have you ever asked yourself
the following question: Why do we sing in church?
It’s a valid question, I
mean where else do you go that you gather together and start singing?
Do the firefighters sit around in the fire station singing about putting
out fires? Do you go to work every day and sing with your co-workers
about the various things you have to do that day at work? To the
average outsider, church singing must look a little strange. I have
actually heard people ask “why do we sing at church?”
Singing is a form of
praise and worship to our God. It is an opportunity for him to hear his
creation bring the gift of music back to him. It doesn’t matter what
you sound like, whether you have a weird voice or not, God loves it.
Imagine if you were a professional basketball player, and you only
wanted to hear people tell you how good you are if they had a voice that
was sweet sounding, nobody with a strange speaking voice were allowed to
praise you for a great game. That is not how God works either. And God
is far greater than any celebrity or popular person.
We are told to “sing unto
the Lord a new song.” I love music, and I love singing to God, I hope
you view our weekly song service as an opportunity to bring music to
God, but also an opportunity to sing prayerful thoughts to God. Have
you ever just read the words we are singing to Him? Some of the ideas
we sing about on Sunday mornings are quite profound, quite prayerful,
things we need to apply to our lives. Here is the bridge from the song
“Hosanna,”
“Heal my heart and make it clean, Open up my eyes to the
things unseen. Show me how to love like You have loved me. Break my
heart for what breaks Yours everything I am for Your Kingdom's cause.
As I walk from earth into eternity”
Next Sunday, concentrate on singing to God, but also
listen to the words we sing, they are a message of praise to our Father,
and a blessing in our Christian walk.
In
Christ,
Mark Walter~
